7 Quick tips for buying vintage, IVB’s way!

Don’t get me wrong but I think there is four different types of vintage:

  • The popular ones, available everywhere and in quantity (Craig’s list, thrift stores…); the bulk
  • The rare pieces, generally handmade and exclusive; the surprises
  • The out of circulation ones, no more available; the treasures
  • The tribal ethnic exotic ones; the originals

We always look for the three last ones, those are the ones that makes our hearts beats and the ones that you’ll find in the Bazaar πŸ™‚

If you are craving for vintage, we assume that you are a an original soul, a bit anticonformist and that you like to be surrounded with things that you know for sure aren’t in everyone’s houses, right?

Quick tips for buying vintage

7 things to know that might help you find the perfect piece!

Here a little cheat sheet to facilitate your researches IF you like the same styles than us! They are so many different vintage styles and pieces that you might have a thing for a completely different look! But if you like what’s on IVB, you might have kind of the same tastes than us! IF you like things BOLD and COLORFUL, IF you love dinnerware pieces, IF you have kiddies and love everything PLAYFUL and old, IF you have a thing for tribal art, here’s our little help list to find great stuff and easily determine what is an unique treasure and what might just stay on shelves…

  • Studio pottery pieces are most of the times exclusives, signed and dated. Whether they were made during the course of a pottery class, own private collection of the crafter or inherited as an estate, you can’t go wrong with them. It’s an easy way to build yourself a pretty original dinnerware set, mix and match patterns, colours and textures and tell a story! Check out our dinnerware collectionΒ hereΒ and by the way, only the 1/4 of our inventory is listed πŸ˜‰
  • Hand carved wood pieces, from all kind! Statuettes, figurines, tray and platters… Lots of craftsmanship involved! Look for different colour tones, wood grain, craving traces… If it’s been carved from an unique piece of wood, without any trace of glue or attachment, this is even better! You know for sure that you have in hands a valuable piece of art! This is one of the best way to add instant bohemian wanderlust vibes to a room or have a piece that will last in time… Our favorite:Β Hand carved wooden rack with detailed elephants
  • Brand names that are existing since decades… Pyrex and Fisher-Price are good examples. They have been there since so long and have beautiful items, dated directly on their products (Fisher-Price) or easily recognizable as their patterns are representing different eras (Pyrex, people have amazing collections!!!) And classic:Β Fisher-Price plane and its Little People pilot from 1980
  • Ethnic pieces are also a go-to if you like that kind of style! People buy items during their vacations or bring their home decoration with them when they are moving into another country and after a while, they change their decor or turn pages… This is when some people’s left asides becomes other people’s treasures and in these specific situations, this is when you find amazing ethnic art, completely outstanding pieces that you wouldn’t have find otherwise! One of our biggest finds:Β Ebony African couple
  • Find your vibe… When you know what kind of vintage is appealing to you, you know where and what to search. Are you a 40’s or more of a 80’s? Each decade has its own style of course but also its own popular materials: pottery… wicker… wood… porcelain… crochet… embroideries… lace… milk glass… enamel… leather… and its popular colours and patterns: brown… beige… pastels… flowers… bold colours… soft pinks… stripes… patchwork… macrame… animal prints… Find your own niche!
  • Check underneath each and every pieces you find, the secret is there… Most of the times, the name written won’t ring any bell to you but it can be gold!
  • Do your researches! The best thing to do when shopping for vintage is to have an electronic device with you that will grants you Internet access so you can check right away if this gorgeous little hand painted porcelain bear that you just spotted is a hit or a miss πŸ˜‰ And sometimes, you have to trust your guts or just go with your feelings cause you can’t find any info but deep inside you know it’s a good one and you already have a place for it in your home πŸ˜‰

Hope it helps!

How to keep things balanced when working from home

Managing daily life and working from home

It’s not our first experience as homeworkers, in fact it’s not our first experience as business owners! We owned two completely different ones in the past and since May 29th of this year, we are the two happy bees behind IVB!

As time goes by, we learned from our mistakes and our successes and we still have a lot to learn but here’s our little 30 cents to the world of WFH (Working From Home):

How to keep things balanced when working from home

The truth is that I’m also writing this post to kindly remind me some important key points to protect my own sanity πŸ˜‰

1.Β Start early

I dedicate my early early mornings to easy tasks that don’t require a lot of thinking. Find little things that will make a difference on your daily work load without requiring too much of official presence πŸ˜‰ As we are co-sleeping with our baby and Im always awake at least 1h before her and if I dare to move, she angrily wakes up, which I don’t want AT ALL cause it sets the tone for the day… And I want our days to go smoothly (who doesn’t want that anyway?)! So, I lay there and work on our Pinterest and Twitter accounts πŸ™‚

  • Pin and repin (10-20)
  • Read what I pinned the day before (!!!) about social media marketing so I can put a couple of new things in place throughout the day
  • As I aim for at least 10 tweets per day, this is the perfect time to do some! 140 characters max, a must at this time od the day lolll!

2. All about punching in and punching out

I’m officially starting around 8.30 am: checking on my planner and sipping a cup of coffee (brainfogged without that, gulp!)

Because we still have kids at home, our day is divided between desk time and home/family routine. Which means…

a) Make the most of every moment. Don’t wait for the laundry to start by itself at the end of the week, don’t wait last minute to prepare kids meal in a complete rush, don’t skip your own meals (need to fees that brain!), DO NOT STAY in pjs all day, not good for ego, no no no!

b) Take a morning and an afternoon break to shake it off, dance it off, stretch it out, have a snack, talk a walk, water the plants, feed the fishes… Whatever! Step aside this laptop, for real… Including cell phone, Ipad and other technologies!

c) Stick to the planner. Don’t try to catch up for yesterday’s lack of time or don’t try to do 2 days at once! Every hour or so, check back where you are at and FOCUS. It’s so hard to stay focus when you are working from home… So many disturbances, even if most of the times they are fun ones like a baby laughing, fresh cookies out from the oven, a beautiful sun outside and an appealing Sangria on the balcony… Lolll! Don’t neglect the power of being your own boss and having your own schedule, sometimes this 3rd or 4th pause is really needed, whether it’s for yourself or for the others surrounding you πŸ™‚

d) Close shop. This is the most important one… So hard to stick to it though, there always something more that you can do, while relaxing at night… Gosh! Punch out folks, punch out!!! (Yes I’m talking to me too!!!)

Find the best hour to close shop and stick to it. For us, it’s around 7pm because if I’m logging out everything before that, I’m missing all the web traffic and this is bad for an online shop relying on Social Media for sales! But be prepared so 7pm won’t become 9.30pm… Or worst…

As I already took all my pics and write all my posts for Instagram, which is the last thing scheduled for the day, I can allow myself some more relaxing work time at night, after dinner, for posting from my chair.

3. Dedicate your nights to family time. It’s easy to be there without not really being there and I’m talking with my heart here. Just be there and don’t think or overthink about your business, what you should have done, what you need to do tomorrow, how late you are in your agenda… Just be there.
Be BALANCED (note to myself).

4. Log out during weekends. Or at least, keep work at the really minimum… It might be 1 Facebook post, 1 IG post and 3-4 tweets in the whole weekend. (But make sure that you will stop cause we all know how this only 10 little minutes often ends up in 3h.;) Or it can be nothing at all! Earth will not stop turning if you disappear from Social Media for 48hrs. For Etsy sellers, orders are processed during business days only so you won’t be late…

5. Plan holidays or vacations. What will you do during Christmas season, will you show up to work every day or you’ll take a couple of days far from your desk? Think about it early on so you’ll be able to announce it in advance to your customers, you’ll have time to plan your own work load and adjust your schedule well, and won’t feel in the obligation to sit and work on the 26th cause you weren’t prepared (been there, done that!) with tons of things in progress that really needs to be completed!

There is so many hours in a day!

If you are working from home, what’s your biggest challenge?

Now it’s time to like it, pin it, share it, tweet it, email it, sing it or well, just ignore it, we won’t be mad at you πŸ™‚

10 office essentials for Etsy sellers (or pretty useful ones!)

After trying to set the perfect office space for weeks, I think I finally found what works best for me, proof is I didn’t change a thing since the last set up πŸ˜‰

Now that I can peacefully sit, be inspired and work, I realized that I also have little things that I’m using every.single.day and that makes my work easier, at all levels whether is updating the Bazaar, marketing on social media, blogging, planning my week, brainstorming or planning orders and shipping.

So here’s The List: my 10 office essentials that I think could be very useful to you too!

  1. Thank you cards with LOGO
  2. Paper Organizer for cards, notes and shipping forms. All important papers needed for IVB are there, all in one place and easy to access. We decided to keep this bamboo one instead of selling it and I just love it! It’s small, narrow and doesn’t take too much space on my desk.Β
  3. Desk Organizer. We use a wicker one as I really wanted to get the vintage vibes around me too! Paper clips, tons of pens, highlighters, measuring tape (so so important for detailing products and get a right shipping fee!)
  4. Small box with dividers, originally sold for jewelry beads and craft supplies. I love it because of its perfect size and most important, I can move the dividers according to the space I need. I use it for our IVB tags, our Promo coupons, our Review reminders and our little logos cards.
  5. Cork board. This is my head on a wall πŸ™‚ I divided it in 3 sections: To prep, To send and To track so I can pin our order receipts on and I have a visual of where we are at! I also put on it a sale counter (bragging!), a To do list, a To buy list, an Inserts list (what to add to our packages), where in the world we have sent so far (bragging again!) and a sample of our business card. I love the fact that our board is huge cause you know, I am visual and a bit of a list addict πŸ˜‰Β
  6. Social Media planner. So so important so I can keep my sanity! I plan my week on Sunday or Monday (posts, blogs, images, important dates) and I can easily keep track of what I need to do on a daily basis. Saved me tons of time and headaches! See my post about it here
  7. Electronic scale. Must have to avoid surprises at Post office and over or under charge shipping fees! We use a simple kitchen scale that can weight up to 12 lbs or 5.5 kg.
  8. Twine dispenser. Yes, you read well, lolll! I use so much of this that I prefer to have in on hand! I need some for our tags, which I do almost every day and for packing and let’s say it, this little turtle is so cute that I couldn’t resist to give it a permanent space!Β
  9. Brainstorm pad. I have ideas in every little corners of my head and lots of kids who takes lots of room in my head loll! I needed a place to write down everything so I won’t forget whatever I wish to work on and having a idea list right in front of me helps me to put them in action!
  10. Charging station. I don’t want to run all over the place again, afraid to lose everything I was working on cause I’m running out of power and I was too busy to check on it, lolll! Never again! A girl learns πŸ˜‰

And I could add: coffee mug, plant, decoration… Everything to get the perfect working nook!

If you like it, share it, pin it, print it and if needed, put a spin on it to make it work for you!

See ya,

The ultimate very beginner’s guide to Social Media marketing

Here I am, sharing tips and tricks on how to plan and manage your Social Media adventure and I’m still a complete newbie in it!

If you are a seasoned adventurer, STOP READING RIGHT NOW! Cause this post isn’t for you, even if I do admire you a lot, you are way over these baby steps πŸ˜‰ OR PLEASE STAY and help us by sharing your wisdom, knowledge and everything you want to share πŸ˜‰ You know of much we admire you!

BUT, if you are trying to swim your way to the shore and feeling most of the times out of breath, I think, and I hope that this calendar that I made up for myself will at least gives you the motivation needed to continue and helps you find your own ways to do things! We all need to make a first step and most of the times, we imitate and copy what seems to work for others before adjusting our own moves, right?!

Ok so let’s start! This is my all new and improved pattern, already saw some results in the last week! Some things are already strongly implanted, others I’m still working on… Bits and pieces from everything I gathered around the web that seems to be good for us!

  • 2-3 comments per day
  • 1 follow per day
  • Use Pinterest to get tons of blogging ideas, think outside of the box!
  • I used to post once a week, on Sundays but I’m giving it a try this week with a middle week post… Let’s see!

  • For our needs, posting at night is giving us the most results. Whatever I’m posting during daytime reaches half the people I can get on evenings.
  • 1-3 posts per day
  • Have a weekly theme and stick to it all week long
  • Max 2 products pics per day, don’t overdo it! (last haul, feature, promos, reminders…)
  • Everyday has a complement too: sharing a blog post, side project, sharing about passions, shop update…
  • On weekends, focus on a more personal approach: celebrating Saturdays, relaxing Sundays, readings… (show your human side!)
  • 2 new accounts to follow per day
  • Engage engage engage!

Facebook (brand new page!)

  • 1 post per day is enough
  • Always Call-To-Action
  • Try to not focus on products on this media…
  • Share motivational quotes, some pins from our Pinterest account, link to our blog posts, links to some diy tips related to our niche…
  • Weekends are for events, gatherings and activities we attended to
  • At least 2 comments per day on other accounts
  • At least 5 likes per day on other accounts
  • At least 1 new account to follow everyday
  • Engage engage engage!

  • 5-10 tweets per day
  • Focus on personal tweets vs business tweets (ratio 5:2)
  • 1 product tweet per day
  • At least 1 tweet related to business per day (could be about us, sharing a link from the web, a retweet, sharing tips…)
  • Each day has its theme so it’s easier for me to be consistent and not all over the place! (Motivation Monday, Tuesday Thoughts, Wednesday Wisdom…)
  • At least 5 new accounts to follow everyday
  • At least 2 retweets per day
  • Take time to personally thank each and every new followers

  • Minimum 10 pins per day, aiming for 20
  • Follow 1 new board per day
  • Create 1 new pin per day (from the shop, from Instagram, from the blog…)
  • Pin every single images that we are using in every single board they can relate to
  • Great quality images only
  • Create 1 new board per week and tweet about it
  • Pin our blog posts
  • Best Pinterest traffic: between 8 am and 11 am on Saturday mornings
  • Early mornings and late nights are also good for us
  • Create boards related to your niche and the interests of your target clientele, stay focus but think big!

Well, I think that sums it all… I still have a lot to learn but I think that it’s a good plan to start somewhere… and adjust… and improve…!

What is your best strategy? What was the move you made that changes everything in one specific media or all of them!

From a newbie to newbies, have a wonderful day! And to you too Social Media gurus! πŸ˜‰ And if you liked what you read, pin it, tweet it, share it!

6 tips for a vintage eclectic boho decor on a budget!

Let’s be honest… I’ve been thinking about my weekly blog post all.week.long… Complete lack of inspiration, way too busy at editing our product listings to make them easier to read… 65 products listed, 65 descriptions to work on…

Better have realized it all, NOW and not after 200 listings, lolll!

So when Sunday arrived, Sunday being the official blogging day for Isis Vintage Bazaar, I stressed all day in front on a blank page that refused to get filled in…

Tried everything to find inspiration!

And Monday came…

So while I was sitting here in the middle of my favorite room in the house, I got this wonderful idea of sharing how to get that vintage eclectic boho look that I love so much, ON A BUDGET and IN 6 STEPS!

  1. Prefer thrifted pieces over classical pieces of furniture from giant stores. Mix and match everything, think outside of the box! Example: we got rid of our huge L-shaped sofa for 2 chairs. 1 of them is from a Thrift store, all real leather, amazing green color and perfect condition for 80$ πŸ™‚ You can see it here: Leather chair
  2. Think texture, comfy, cozy! Go wild and bold! We add a long hair vibrant red rug on the floor and tons of cushions… Big oversized cushions! We kept the ones that we bought with our former sofa, added 2 that we were not using anymore in our bedroom, 2 bean bags and 2 huge squares floor pillows…
  3. Throws throws throws! I had 2 Mexican colorful blankets that were hiding in the closet, too bold for our former classical decor that I was extremely pleased to get out and use! 1 is sitting on the green chair with 2 completely different cushions (see the pic above, they are shown there with the blanket) and the other one is just laying everywhere, waiting to be picked up by someone in need of a little cozy wrap!
  4. Create nooks! We use one of the oversized floor pillow as a seat and added a huge cushion covered with a throw from the closet (!) as a back. Next to it there is…
  5. Upcycle! Four wooden crates, quickly painted in white, fixed together as a low shelving unit on which we screwed a beautiful (and blue! Think color!) vintage adjustable lamp from the thrift store and plants… Lots of plants! See the whole corner here:Β Handmade unit and reading corner
  6. And then what? Eye candies! Some boho pieces for their colorful & positive vibes (dreamcatcher, painting, positive quotes, candles, flowers…), favorite meaningful pieces that you harvested among years and vintage accessories (preaching for our own parish but you can find amazing vintage original and exclusive stuff at IVB! Click here to discover our ever growing list of vintage goodies!Β Isis Vintage Bazaar)

BAM! You got your different, original, eclectic room filled with YOUR own vibes without spending tons of money! With handly picked treasures that speaks to your heart, spirit and soul πŸ˜‰ I had to insert it there!

We made the switch a couple of months ago and we just LOVE our new family room! Β Comfy, cozy, with lots of different places to lay and relax!

Now if I could keep some vintage stuff for ourselves… Thinking about this wicker magazine rack, this green vase, this beaded curtain, these wood carved African figurines… πŸ˜‰

Pssst! If you are not already following us on Instagram and you love home decor inspiration, give a try to the 2 accounts mentionned above, you might fell in love! The first one is the official account of IVB and the second one is mine πŸ™‚ See ya!

Finding inspiration…

I’m a nester, definitely. I can’t feel good somewhere if I didn’t take time to deeply invest in the decor, the functionality and the vibes of it.

When we decided to open the boutique, I didn’t realize how much creativity it will demand to list vintage curated goods πŸ˜‰

Then, what starts as a cute little project turns into a huge passion…

I needed to find inspiration for amazing photography and as you might have already realized, we are more of a lifestyle-full-of-plants type! Need ideas, lots of ideas!

Then comes Instagram… And this Blog… And Twitter… And Pinterest… And recently, FacebookΒ and all these requires different images, different posts, different styles… Really required a Social Media planner so the organization freak in me could breathe πŸ˜‰

And by opening all these creativity doors, guess what? I feel the huge need of creating stuff, loll! All the different little seeds of ideas that were sleeping somewhere deep inside me just woke up, lolll! So there came side projects!

Right now, I’m working in partnership with daughter #2 to create jewelry made from recycled adornments… We have 2 different collections, 1 is a combination of nature finds mixed with recycled pieces and the other one is more rough, boho style. We are preparing our official launch by the beginning of fall and we needed a space where we can relax and find inspiration, a place to let our mojo flow πŸ™‚ A place that can also welcome my first steps into the sewing world, lolll!

This is where Hubby skills for upcycling and repurposing came in and where this fabulous creativity corner take place!

Welcome to Isis Vintage Bazaar HQ, welcome in our studio!

Where it’s all about creating an inviting space where comfort rhymes with stimulation…

Where it’s all about feeling at home and confident, surrounded by little things that makes you happy…

Where wherever you lay your eyes, you have this feeling of this is me, this is who I am

Give me a I, give me a V, give me a B; it’s all about branding, baby!

This last week was all, and I really mean ALL about branding and finding a way to add finishing touches to our packages! After hours on Pinterest (so grateful for this time comsuming machine!) and tons of notes, I think Im finally happy with how everything ends up! I think… πŸ˜‰

We printed our logo by dozens so we can now use them when we are preparing our shipment (marketing!)

Working space Isis Vintage Bazaar

Working it up!

We went from straight handwritten thank you cards to this little cute thing still containing a handwritten note (with our logo at the bottom of it from now on) but also 2 coupons made from scratch: 1 is a Thank You discount and the other, a Review reminder πŸ˜‰

The Mug πŸ˜‰

Thank you thank you thank you!

We are currently in the process of tagging ALL our inventory with handmade handwritten tags from scratch and lots of LOVE…

Prepared with LOVE!

And we bought bold colorful tissue paper to add a bit of WOW to our packaging πŸ˜‰

Of course, little handmade gifts are still included in boxes! Just because they make us happy!

This is really us now: bold, colorful and made from scratch, lots of love and a funny attention to details πŸ™‚ Will you be the lucky one to unwrap one of our packages? πŸ™‚

Have a wonderful week,

Fa – IVB

When you see…

When you see…

A warm lighting: there is a huge industrial lamp lit up with 3 others house lights and HOURS of working against shadows, lighting up, lighting off, maybe 3 lamps lit, maybe just one, HOURS of trial to get that so precious perfect lighting that brings up the desired ambiance…

When you see…

A beautiful set up, with depths, heigths, symetry and asymetry: there is HOURS of moving stuff around, playing with shapes, adding stuff, removing stuff, playing with angles, fixing this and fixing that, using the dining room table, no the bench, no the brick wall, no the pallet sign, no let’s try the table again…

When you see…

A seemingly perfect environment, clean and professional: there is a kitchen mess far away in the shadow, a crying constantly nursing baby that is so tired but refuse to sleep then found her happy place sitting on the dining bench and chalking on her little board, bagel crusts and half eaten watermelon on the other end of the table, a tight schedule cause kiddies are almost back from school and a deep deep desire to stay focus…

When you see…

The finish product: you don’t see everything that’s behind…

Im talking about ALLΒ the love, ALL the passion and ALL the happiness that these 3 hours of work brought into our lives πŸ˜‰ Everything else, even if it appeared intense, was just some bagel crusts and half eaten watermelon πŸ˜‰

What’s new Scooby Doo?

Well… Let’s brag a little bit πŸ˜‰

We are working hard on our brand and our images… We found amazing ideas to complete our current shop, based on creation and handcrafting… We got our first review (5 stars!!!) on Etsy :)))) We got 50 more followers on Instagram in 3 days and reached another hundred visits in the shop…

We are beyond happy!

Next step? Marketing, always marketing! Having fun (as always) and not forgetting to take care of our plants πŸ˜‰ Time flies when you love what you do!

We still have so many beautiful things to photoshoot, only 1/3 of our inventory is online πŸ™‚ And flea markets season is starting as well as yard sales ones… And we found a huge amazing spot with so many beautiful pieces at a couple of hours from here so we are planning a shopping trip soon…!

What else? We try to stick to the posting schedule πŸ˜‰

… And END up, WRAP up, CLOSE up a school year… So we can really focus lolll!

Premium packaging lesson 101

We made our first sale!!!

And we had to do our first extra careful packaging cause you know, it went to another country! So this is when Claude Tetris skills jumped in the game πŸ˜‰ And it was perrrrrrfect!

We are proud to say that we took really seriously the way we are wrapping up your purchases and for us, there is no such little thing that didn’t worth a PREMIUM packaging. You can shop in confidence, we will do more than our best to protect your vintage treasure so it will arrive in time and in perfect shape!

Let’s say that we are shipping away some beautiful vintage ironstone pieces, handmade… Here’s your chance to learn more about our shipping preparation and we hope that you will keep that in mind when shopping with us!

So here’s some lessons from the Premium packaging course that we graduated of (kidding!), well one of us did, the other wasn’t ever really good playing Tetris (seriously!)… πŸ˜‰

  • You shall always make sure that you have the right size box for your precious item… Almost squeeze it!

We commit to use the smallest box possible, it’s easier for us to handle yes but as customers ourselves, we know that it’s not fun to receive a big box almost empty and we also know that it increases the risks of damaging goods… And nobody likes to go from the excitement of unpacking a parcel to the huge disappointment of finding our Precious in bits and pieces…

Bringing up to our next lesson…

  • Don’t let your item lay directly on the bottom of the box… Protect every.single.item…

Bubblewrap, the word is saying it all… And don’t let them near hands that doesn’t have anything to do cause ya know, these little popping bubbles are so addictive… πŸ˜‰

We have a huge box of styrofoam shells, like a giant box… A really big one, loll! Better use them as a bed for our products, a fluffy comfy bed that will protect everything from bouncing… EVEN if we are not huge fan of this not eco-friendly product, we are proud to say that we didn’t buy them but instead, recycled them from a little shop close by. Re-using is as much important than recycling πŸ˜‰

  • You shall always make sure that your item won’t move in any matter, won’t move from one side to the other, won’t move up and down…

This is where we use foam again… We know, BUT again, it’s recycled pieces from shops around us, RE-USING RE-USING RE-USING! On piece each side of the box for extra cushioning and well, another one piece on top…

  • You shall always keep an eye on what you use at home that you can… re-use…!  As online shop owners, we are lucky to be able to control what we use and what we buy as basic materials… We don’t work with other’s stuff and decisions, better make good ones! One earth… One chance…

Did you know that eggs crates are awesome for finishing up a packaging? We have a bunch of kids (yep, 7!) and we buy eggs in large, very large quantity… This is us re-using again cause you know, we are trying hard to think twice about how we do things, what we really need and how we can stay eco-friendly as much as possible!

So, feeling safe to receive a shipment from our far far away beautiful Quebec city in Canada?

Go for it, you won’t regret it on top of it, you’ll make us happy loll πŸ˜‰

Thanks for reading!

Oh, did I say that we had our first sale?! πŸ˜‰
